PRESS RELEASE Spring 2005 - MIAMI PREMIERE FOR BROADWAY MUSICAL
The stage is set for Fourth Dimension of South Beach to launch itself
into the 2005-2006 entertainment season here on Miami Beach.
Their first major production is the South Florida Premiere of award
winning comedy musical ‘Don’t Hug Me ‘– a touching
and hilarious story of love, betrayal and the need to follow your dreams.
Picture the scene, it’s the coldest day of the year ‘Up
North’ and a move to the Sunshine State of Florida seems like
a very good idea! Then the music man arrives in town - in the form of
a karaoke salesman!
The lives of the highly talented five-person cast are turned upside
down. Broadway singing star Charles West (Gunner Johnson) appeared in
Scarlet Pimpernel and toured internationally with Miss Saigon and West
Side Story. Gunner’s wife, Clara, is British actress Ellen Jameson,
who has appeared in several South Florida productions, including the
Hollywood Shakespeare festival. Two excellent young improv actors, James
Carey (Aarvid Gisselson) & Valerie Zach (Bernice Lundstrom) are
Laughing Gas regulars. Singer and songwriter Craig Strang (Kanute Gunderson
) has just launched his new group, Jazz Experience.
Set in the ‘Bunyan Bar’ in Blue Ox Country, Minnesota, relationships
are formed and broken, dreams created and destroyed. In an effort for
each individual to be heard and understood, communication is conducted
through the karaoke machine.
Audiences out West and Up North have fallen in love with this fast paced,
rollercoaster ride of a musical comedy. Now it’s coming South.
Joel Zwick, director of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, called it ‘A
quirky, charming musical’ and the Los Angeles Times described
it as ‘a hokey-jokey crowd pleaser’.
Fourth Dimension of South Beach have been performing in the Miami area
for some three years but this is their most ambitious project to date.
Their object is to encourage community participation in the performance
arts and to allow people to realise their dreams and discover their
own creative abilities.
Theatre is the perfect opportunity for community involvement. All ages,
backgrounds and ability levels are encouraged to participate. The 4DSB
mission is to aim to enrich, inspire and entertain artists and audiences
alike by developing and producing theatre of integrity that celebrates
the diverse elements in the community.
‘Don’t
Hug Me’ was voted Best Original Musical in the Los Angeles Artistic
Director Achievement Awards. Playing to sold out audiences, it had become
the longest running musical comedy in LA when it closed after six smash
hit months.
‘Don’t
Hug Me’ is scheduled for a Broadway opening next year –
but first a limited engagement on Miami Beach. Presented by Fourth Dimension
of South Beach at two Lincoln Road venues, Hice Hall at the Community
Church on November 4 & 5, and November 11 & 12 at the newly
refurbished and historic Colony Theatre. Don’t miss it!
